goodbye, california

i am sitting here and i am feeling incredibly vulnerable.

today was super weird. i got evicted, amongst other things, from the house where i sat and wrote this song, goodbye, california, the 3rd in the free download series from the upcoming new album, ‘ours’.

it seems so far away, that moment, sitting there, not really knowing what to do, not really able to do much but write sad songs on the piano. it is funny how life is just a big circle. the other day someone asked me on formspring “have you ever had a time in your life when you felt like you weren’t yourself? what did you do to make it better?”

in my rare moments of clarity i sometimes feel like the answer to this is: Fall In To Your Passions.

whatever that is…making weird birdhouses, baking and never eating anything you bake (my mom does this), knitting tiny blue squids with googly eyes…whatever you love doing, just do that a bunch. if you want to be alone, be so alone. if you need to be around people, go be around every person. just do what ever you have to do to get back to you. you know the answer is already inside of you, most humans just do not listen to the forces that propel them towards what you they instinctively and ultimately desire. and i’m not talking about material items. maybe you’ve always wanted to live in the forest. go. go do it.
now.

so that is what i did. not literally, i did not go live in a forest, but i might as well have. it was a forest where the leaves were words and the twigs were notes, and the trunks were melodies tying like twine the rhythm and rhyme.

and here we are almost a year later, finally finally finally the song comes out and i am, oddly, in the exact same place. well, similar…thanksfully 😉

everything is a cycle, a circle
this whole world just a globe spinning
around and around

all we can hope for is that each spin we are something closer to
something
anything

i got to see a lot of incredible art recently
amazing art
the best there is on this planet

i think of these artists putting each tiny brush stroke up against the canvas
their noses almost covered in paint, staring so close at their next move
their next creation, formulating constantly a plan of attack
standing back and accessing every few moments
and for every spin around, they get a little closer

maybe they thought the last spin around was the best it could get
maybe the worst
but by the next spin you can bet one thing
it is always
always
different

hi.

so, maybe you heard (maybe you heard it more than a couple times) i’ve been trying to record some songs. shouldn’t be that big of a deal. supposedly I am a song writer or something. but, this year was weird and things got strange and I needed help. your help.

and then you helped. over the course of some more months I got my butt in to studios from vancouver to virginia to toronto, dusted off some old songs and finished up some new songs. some videos were made. some friends were made. some recordings were made.

if you want the read in depth version of all this i feel like I could sum it up pretty quick. if you don’t want to read about it just accept this humble thank you and download the song. thank you.

I will tell you this much, if you care to listen.

everyone always says the same shit when they put out a record. “this is my best work” “i’m so proud of this” “look at me aren’t I fancy”. something happens when you are in a studio and there’s a red light on or a tape rolling and you know why you’re there and it’s just you and you alone. and what got you there are the people who believe in you. you stop feeling shitty about yourself and who you are and you start thinking hell, if these people believed in me this much, to donate their hard earned cash to pay for something that doesn’t even bloody well exist yet, maybe I’m not complete shit.

even if I am, it would be a damn tragedy if I didn’t keep trusting my gut, and listening to my instincts because they got me this far (in to that studio, I mean). and these people (ahem…I guess, You People), were fans of it enough to pre-order, make donations and have me mailed to your houses. so if what i do is shit, i guess that is just what you’re in to, and hey that is alright 😉

all I know is there isn’t a note, chord or lyric on here that I didn’t obsess over or question relentlessly. if I ever had a doubt or problem, i would ask my self “is this how my record sounds” or “is this the part that is on my record”. if ever I hesitated, the feeling that the music was supposed to be a certain way (almost like it already existed somewhere, in my head) always got me back in track.

cos if there is one thing I’ve learned it is this: if you don’t do something for the right reasons, it will never feel right. any success achieved by being something you’re not isn’t success.

so when you listen to these songs, these songs we made, you’re getting a real piece of me. and because you put me there, in those studios, it really is a real collaboration of you and I.

I have so many people to thank. I hope you know who you are. if you don’t than I really am shite haha

all the best, see you out there. and above all, Thank You.

We did it. We made it.

It’s…Ours.

Billy the Kid and the Southside Boys – Ours

The album.

It has a name.

It has a cover.

It’s called “Ours” because this album was entirely fan and friend funded. Even the studios, musicians, engineers and artists at times donated their services to make this thing happen. I wanted the people who made this album possible to hold it in their hands and know that they were such a huge a part of it and I couldn’t have done it without them. We made it. Together. It’s Ours.

Some Important Information Regarding My New Album

Hey.

So I’m sitting in the studio mixing Goodbye, California, and it occurred to me that I need to thank you.

So much.

I wouldn’t be sitting here without your contribution to this recording process, and you can’t possibly ever know how much that means to me. I could not have done this without you. I would not be here without you.

Because of this, I wanted to ask your opinion on naming this collection of songs. My thoughts are leaning towards calling the album something that suggests the fact it was all fan and friend funded…but I can’t quite think of just what exactly quite yet. So I thought I’d ask. What do you think?

Thank you, So Much. We did it can you believe it!?!?! 🙂 Also thank you for your patience, I know this has been a long time comin’ but I assure you, it sounds so freakin awesome it was totally worth it!!!!! haha 😉

Gratefully Yours,

Billy

ps if you want to help with this final stage or making this record you can still do so at http://www.billythekidonline.com/

pps there are a bunch of new fund-raising options including getting me mailed to your house for a weekend and owning half the publishing rights to any song you choose!

ppss please tag and forward this to anyone who you think might be interested 🙂

Recording! :D

Thank you so much for your donations and preorders!!! We are almost done ten songs and only have 5 more to go. Please help me find the money to do this hehe! 🙂

Here is a song we did yesterday at Sound of Music in Virignia 🙂

Where Do You Find Inspiration and How Do You Cure Writer’s Block?

Hi Billy,

what do you do when you are looking for inspiration? I like to write poetry/ try to make songs, but I never know what to write about.

Another question I have, is when you get writer’s block, how do you get rid of it?’

For me, inspiration comes from all over the place, most of all when I least expect it. I’m inspired by people, places, current events, movies…you name it. One thing I have a hard time with though, is forcing inspiration.

Creative people everywhere are constantly searching for a remedy to the illustrious “writer’s block”. I am part of this group! Personally, I like the Kevin Smith approach to Writer’s Block. When asked what he does when he can’t think of anything to write about, he replied:

I don’t write.

There you have it!

Obviously this isn’t an option for most creative people. But if you want to know my opinion, here it is: Don’t force inspiration. Of course there needs to be a divide between never producing anything at all, because you’re just waiting around for the perfect melody or concept to just “come to you”. And by no means am I encouraging you to be lazy. But let’s face it, most of the garbage that exists out there in the world exists because someone (or a group of people) sat down with either a deadline or the intention of creating something by the time they stood up. (A lot of this conversations, especially in Hollywood, begin with the phrase “let’s write a hit song!”)

As I like to say, to each his or her own, however…

Some of the most inspirational people I know are constantly creating. It’s almost a part of their fabric as much as breathing in and out it is. It is because they are so creative that they have a higher output and thus, a higher opportunity to create something great.

Of this mindset are some of my favourite songwriters of all time: The Beatles.

I heard a story about how they were such productive songwriters. When asked how they had such a broad and plentiful catalog of music, they answered that they would just sit in a room and not leave until they had created something (I’m paraphrasing of course). The intention of this was to think of each song as an exercise toward being a better songwriter. Much like one would practice a math equation or piece of music in order to become an expert, they would, in turn, practice the craft of songwriting.

The great thing about thinking of each song as an exercise (rather than the be-all-end-all) is that it completely frees you from some of the limitations that may be, unbeknownst to you, stifling your creativity.

One example is the concept of sitting down to write a song and thinking “Okay! This song is going to be my masterpiece!”

The problem with this is that you will write the word “The” and immediately cross it out, exclaiming “A masterpiece most certainly would not start with the word ‘The’…!”

This is the beginning of never finishing anything.

So in short, don’t be too critical of yourself, think of each song as an exercise and if you’re not inspired, don’t write 😉

How do you guys find your inspiration? Doesn’t have to be for songwriting, this can include anything creative from poetry to painting.
